Hillscapes of India
18th and 19th Centuries.

INTRODUCTION
The Victoria Memorial presents a gallery to the people of Tripura. This is a part of the activities in North-Eastern states and organised through financial support and encouragement of the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India.

The gallery focuses Hillscape views of different parts of India. These have been reproduced from original paintings in the collection of the Victoria Memorial. The artists are Thomas Daniell, William Daniell, Samuel Davis, Emily Eden, William Simpson, Charles Stewart Hardinge, G. P. Thomas and Captain Sherwill. The exhibits give an idea on our Hillscapes and life during the 18th and 19th Centuries. At one level it has a very limited purpose : we only attempt to draw viewers' attention to the Hillscapes of India in pre-camera days. In a wider sense, however, we may trace the history, geography and cross-cultural experience from the standpoint of an organic intellectual, social anthropologist or art historian.
